How the estimate works
The tool splits the text into words and looks each one up in a frequency-ranked word list. Words in the first 500 ranks count as A1, the next 500 as A2, the next 700 as B1, and the rest of the list as B2. Academic words and anything outside the list count as C1. The text is scored at the lowest band where no more than 8% of its words sit above that band, with the level raised by one step if the average sentence is longer than 22 words.
Word list and license
The word-frequency data behind this tool is the New General Service List (NGSL) and the New Academic Word List (NAWL), by Browne, Culligan & Phillips (newgeneralservicelist.com), released under CC BY-SA 4.0. The bands used here are our own split of that list, and this page shares the derived word bands under the same CC BY-SA 4.0 license: download the band list as JSON (11,061 word forms, with the source and license recorded inside the file).
